Welcome Aboard the Learning Safari!!!
Welcome aboard the learning safari! This year my first grade students will be excited to find themselves part of a jungle community. When I think of a jungle, I think of all the many different animals. To me this represents all the unique students in the class. We all come together and bring our own thoughts, ideas, opinions, and feelings to the classroom. I believe this is a wonderful thing. Although I love that aspect of a jungle, I've found putting all these different animals into the same area can cause them to act a bit wild and crazy. I'm a fan of wild and crazy when it's about learning, but not behavior. So our classroom behavior system relates to our theme.
Students will earn jungle bucks for doing numerous things each week. For example, a student can earn a buck or two or five or how ever many I feel they deserve for being respectful, trying their best, taking risks, doing acts of kindness, etc. At the end of each week, the student with the most jungle bucks will be named the "Top Cat" of the week. This means they get to choose a reward. My goal is for each student to strive to be and do the best they can. I hope each and every student will have the honor of being "Top Cat" of our first grade jungle.
The students and I will also keep a running total of jungle bucks and we will randomly have a class auction where the students can spend their bucks they worked hard to earn. It's important for students to work hard and try their best daily, because they never know when the next auction will be. The more money a student has the more likely they will get a desired item at the auction. I've really enjoyed doing this system in the past and find students work hard and strive to meet our classroom expectations every day.
